Sign our EU statement?

I’ve just realised that a few years ago I wrote a tiny app to let people sign the Cleanweb manifesto: https://github.com/cleanweb-uk/manifesto-signup.

It let people use their social media accounts to agree to a statement, and then tweet their agreement. It occurred to me that we could repurpose this to have a “sign Something New’s EU statement” app, to let people pledge to vote in, and agree to our reasons why they should, then share it.

I’ll adapt it a little over the weekend (shouldn’t take long) and post back here with the result. What statement should we make, do you think?

First stab, something like this but better written:

We the undersigned, agree that the UK should remain in the European Union. The future is about collaboration, and national borders are becoming less relevant in our globalised world. The EU is not perfect, but we believe it is better to stay in the EU and work to make it better than to abandon it completely.

Thoughts, improvements, etc etc, fire away.

Working app for testing is up at https://somethingnew-eu-referendum.herokuapp.com.

Give it a try, I need to add branding and wording yet, but it’s a start. Also, needs Facebook signing; that’s next probably.

Nice domain name now: http://voteremain.somethingnew.org.uk/

Looks good. Sorry that I’ve been inactive recently, but I’m a fan of any newfangled digital tool that could spark an interest in Something New.

No worries, that’s how it goes! Current pledge text I’m working on is:

We the undersigned, agree that the UK should remain in the European Union,
and pledge to vote Remain in the referendum on June 23, 2016.

Our future in the network age is about collaboration, and national borders are
becoming less relevant in our globalised world. We must work together to solve
our problems and build a better future at a global scale. Our future is as a
linked global society that can learn to co-operate and co-exist, and let go
of the tribalism of our past.

No institution is perfect, but it is better to work to make the EU more
democratic and transparent, than abandon almost 60 years of peace and
collaboration across the continent.

Any thoughts?

How about:

We, the undersigned, agree that the UK should remain in the European Union,
and pledge to vote Remain in the referendum on June 23, 2016.

Our future in the network age is about collaboration, especially as national borders
become less relevant in our globalised world. We must work together to solve
our problems and build a better future on a global scale. Our future, therefore, can be that of a linked global society that can learn to co-operate and co-exist, and let go
of the tribalism of our past.

No institution is perfect, but it is better to work to make the EU more
democratic and transparent, than abandon almost 60 years of peace and
progress across the continent.

Just the odd tweak, nothing substantial.

Thanks @andrewdwilliams, I’ve rolled that in.

OK, now live with Facebook signing as well. One last bug to fix (image display for Facebook) and I think we can spread it around tomorrow. Give it a go, especially if you have a public Facebook profile please

OK, I think https://voteremain.somethingnew.org.uk/ is ready for primetime. Any testing greatly appreciated @philipjohn @andrewdwilliams @PaulJRobinson etc etc.

I’ve zeroed the test database, so from here it’s the real thing. Let’s see what happens!
